LASER HAIR REMOVAL
Laser hair removal is a procedure that combines a series of treatments to remove unwanted hair and prevent future hair growth. Many people get laser hair removal treatments to remove unwanted hair on their face, underarms, bikini area, back, chest, shoulders, legs, arms, abdomen, buttocks, and neck.
Before each session, the area being treated must be cleared of surface hair. Patients are asked to shave before arriving at the clinic, or otherwise technicians can assist them in shaving. Technicians may apply a topical numbing cream prior to treatment, depending on what area is being treated and on the patient's sensitivity.
The laser is then focused on a designated area of skin and its light is absorbed by the underlying hair follicles. The heat damages the hair in its active growth stage and with each subsequent treatment, continues to destroy the follicles' regrowth capabilities.
Depending on the area being treated, laser hair removal sessions can last anywhere from 15-90 minutes. There is no required recovery time after laser treatments, and patients usually resume their normal routine immediately. Minor symptoms such as redness and swelling are sometimes known to occur after treatment. While some patients report persisting redness a few days after treatment, the majority of patients' symptoms disappear within a few hours.
Major side effects are rare with laser hair removal, but may include changes in skin pigmentation. This would also be a temporary effect, improving a few weeks after treatment. Sun exposure must be limited for some time before and after treatment to minimize skin agitation, and to help patients avoid the onset of side effects.
