Collagen

Collagen is a natural substance that, when injected into the skin in implant form, replenishes the natural collagen layer just below the skin. The rejuvenating, smoothing effects are immediately visible and can last for about 3-6 months. The actual treatment usually takes about 30 minutes to complete, and is commonly performed to correct wrinkles on either side of the mouth and between the base of the nose and upper lip.

Collagen implants can also be used to plump and enhance lips. In both cases, the implants will wear away with time, and be absorbed by the body, so repeat treatments can be pursued based on the duration of results, and according to preference.

Patients can have a collagen treatment and leave right after it to continue their normal routine. There is no recovery time involved. No anesthesia is necessary for collagen injections, either.

Q: Are creams containing collagen enough to smooth out?
A: Once collagen begins to naturally wear down during the aging process, there is no way to reverse the breakdown. Topical solutions such as creams and moisturizers can work to rejuvenate the epidermis or outer layers of the skin. However, unless creams (with or without collagen) and moisturizers include ingredients such as alpha hydroxy acids, they do not penetrate deeper layers of skin and therefore, have no effect on replenishing the collagen under the skin.
